2019

Jack Nicklaus received his gold Rolex Day-Date in 1967 and wore it almost every day for more than 50 years. Before each round, he placed it safely inside his golf bag, returning it to his wrist after the final putt. The watch accompanied 12 of his 18 professional major celebrations before being auctioned in 2019 for $1.22 million, with every dollar benefiting the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.

In May 2019 Phillips announced the sale of the watch, with Nicklaus’s own account of what it meant to him and why he chose to part with it for the Foundation.

Rolex time at the club Jack built.

The partnership keeps time at Muirfield Village, too. Two Rolex post clocks in the club’s green and gold, “Muirfield” above the dial and “Village” below, stand beside the course and in front of the clubhouse. Above the clubhouse doors, a Rolex clock framed in the fluted bezel of a Rolex watch is set in the stone of the clock tower, looking out over the course where the Memorial Tournament has been played every year since 1976.
