Golfweek has released its list of the Top-100 Modern Courses in the United States according to the weekly magazine’s raters. Included in the annual list are 10 Nicklaus Design layouts—all of which are returning to the list for at least the second year in a row.
Coming in at No. 7 is Sebonack in Southampton, N.Y., a Jack Nicklaus design with Tom Doak. Also included in the list’s top-20 is No. 13 Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio—host to the annual Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide on the PGA TOUR.
The venerable Whispering Pines in Trinity, Texas, ranked No. 36 on the list, followed by Castle Pines in Castle Rock, Colo., ranked at No. 48. Mayacama Golf Club in Santa Rosa, Calif., improved 10 spots in this year’s list to close out the top-50 at No. 49.
Harbour Town Golf Links, Jack Nicklaus’ first-ever design project and a co-design with Pete Dye, ranked No. 52. The course is known for hosting the RBC Heritage—one of the longest-running events on the PGA TOUR. Shoal Creek, the Alabama layout also known for hosting events on TOUR (two-time host of the PGA Championship and five-time host of the Regions Tradition on the PGA TOUR Champions), was ranked 69th. Manele Golf Club in Lanai, Hawaii, also came within the list’s top-75 at No. 73.
Valhalla Golf Club, a three-time host of the PGA Championship (1996, 2000, 2014), improved by six over its position in the 2016 list to rank No. 77. The Concession in Bradenton, Fla., a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in association with Tony Jacklin, was ranked No. 93.
In total, there are 217 Nicklaus Design golf courses in the United States built after 1960 and thus considered eligible for Golfweek’s Top-100 Modern Courses in the USA list. Worldwide, the firm has 410 golf courses in 41 countries and 39 states.
