A month after a wildly successful launch, Jack Nicklaus Ice Cream, a new premium ice cream priced with the family in mind, is being made available for purchase this week at 60 Columbus-area Kroger stores. The debut in Nicklaus’ Central Ohio hometown comes after a launch during The Honda Classic, where patrons of the popular PGA Tour stop enjoyed tasting and testing 50,000 scoops. The first stores to feature the ice cream were Winn Dixie and Bi-Lo stores in the southeastern United States.
Jack Nicklaus Ice Cream manufacturer, Schwan’s Global Supply Chain, Inc., announced in February that the golf icon was launching the pint-sized product, with seven unique flavors and a goal to support children’s healthcare charities.
The seven varieties of Jack Nicklaus Ice Cream are Warm Spiced Butter Pecan; Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl (known by many as Buckeye); Salted Caramel Toffee; Strawberry Lemonade; Triple Chocolate; Coffee and Donuts; and Homemade Vanilla. The suggested retail price is $1.99.
Jack, a recent recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal—the highest honor the U.S. Congress can bestow on an individual—and his wife, Barbara, are devoted to myriad philanthropic efforts, and most are focused on children’s healthcare. In 2004, the Nicklaus family founded the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation with the goal of providing families access to world-class pediatric healthcare. Schwan is a supporter of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. Once the Jack Nicklaus Ice Cream pilot is complete later this year and deemed successful, distribution will broaden nationwide and a percentage of sales will benefit the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and another children’s charity or charities with a significant national impact on pediatric healthcare.
“Kroger is delighted to be able to bring the Jack Nicklaus Ice Cream to customers here in Columbus,” said Kroger spokeswoman Jennifer Jarrell. “Jack Nicklaus is one of Columbus’ hometown heroes. We’re confident that his ice cream, paired with the fact it will support children’s charities, will be a hole-in-one with customers.”
The Nicklaus Companies continue to introduce quality consumer products with a philanthropic connection. Among the Nicklaus-branded or licensed products introduced in recent years that benefit children’s charities are water, wine, lemonade, sunglasses and golf balls.
