Generous sponsors and benefactors of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation ( raised over $1.3 million at The Jake, an annual dinner, auction and pro-am golf tournament that serves as the foundation’s primary fundraising event. Now in its ninth year, the event took place Feb. 24-25 at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fla.
Participating professionals included Jack Nicklaus, Robert Allenby, Chip Beck, Keegan Bradley, Nicolas Colsaerts, Ernie Els, Rickie Fowler, Tom Gillis, David Hearn, Steve Marino, Rory McIlroy, Greg Norman, Andy North, Louis Oosthuizen, Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel and Camilo Villegas.
The Jake is named in honor of Jake Walter Nicklaus, the son of Steve and Krista Nicklaus and grandson of Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 17 months. Funds from The Jake will be directed to further the mission of the foundation, which is to provide access to world-class health care for children and support cutting edge programs focused on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of childhood diseases and disorders.
“Jake was our little angel and he touched so many lives in a short period of time, and we thought there was no better way to honor, cherish and celebrate his memory than to put his name on an event that will impact so many young lives for years to come,” said Barbara Nicklaus, Chair of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.
Generous sponsors, amateurs and professionals supporting The Jake have helped the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation fund the establishment of two Miami Children’s Hospital Nicklaus Centers. The first center opened in Loxahatchee, Fla.—in the western portion of Palm Beach County—in the summer of 2010. Since that time, the center has hosted more than 2,000 subspecialty visits and currently features the services of the following pediatric subspecialists: craniofacial/plastic and reconstructive surgeon, dermatologist, endocrinologist, clinical geneticist, gastroenterologist, allergist/immunologist, neurologist, nephrologist, and an orthopedic surgeon specializing in scoliosis and spinal disorders.
The Miami Children’s Hospital Nicklaus Outpatient Center opened in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. in November 2012. This state-of-the-art, 21,500-square-foot facility offers rehabilitative services, including speech, occupational, physical and feeding therapy; diagnostics and imaging; after-hours pediatric urgent care; and the rotation of subspecialty physicians.
